What This Hydrangea Season Tells Us About Physical Therapy

My wife and I love hydrangeas. I wouldn’t say that either of us exactly has a “green thumb”, but we enjoy planting flowers in our garden every year.

Two years ago, we planted several hydrangeas and looked forward to seeing them bloom the following summer. Well, last summer came and...nothing. Our hydrangeas didn’t bloom AT ALL.

We were disappointed and didn’t know what happened. Regardless, we remained patient and hoped for a better year this year.

This past spring, my wife and I started to notice more and more buds on our hydrangeas. We became cautiously optimistic that it was going to be a good season.

By late spring and early summer, BOOM! Our hydrangeas exploded with flowers.

You’ve probably noticed that it’s been a fantastic year for hydrangeas. But why exactly? What separates this year from last year?

According to Rick Harper, a professor in urban forestry at the University of Massachusetts, very cold temperatures last winter and spring created poor conditions for hydrangeas and killed a lot of their flowering buds.

“It’s important to think about the growing season kind of like chapters in a book, where the previous growing season impacts this growing season,” says Harper.

In other words, the success of this growing season was largely determined a while ago, and we’re currently reaping the rewards.

One of the biggest thrills for us at PT PROGRESSION is seeing our clients thrive outside of our facility. This summer, they've participated in kayak tours, golf trips, and sailing excursions, just to name a few.

This weekend, one of our clients is doing the Pan Mass Challenge.

How cool is that?

During the winter and spring, we helped them stay healthy and get their bodies ready for the demands of their activities. Through consistency with their treatment program, they’re now achieving their big goals for the summer.

Every year when the calendar hits August, it causes me to slowly start thinking about the fall. I think about all of the activities I want to do and all of the things I want to accomplish to make the most of the season.

What are your goals for this fall? What do YOU want to accomplish?
