"Damar Hamlin Bill" Signed Into Law

The sudden cardiac arrest sustained by Damar Hamlin on Monday Night Football in January 2023 was a shock to the nation. The high-profile case championed by the Bills' safety has helped improve awareness and preparedness to help others with the same fate.

Passed last month by the Senate, the Cardiomyopathy Health Education, Awareness, Research, and Training in Schools (HEARTS) Act of 2024 was just recently signed into law by the White House. HEARTS is a bipartisan bill aimed at enhancing preparedness for cardiac emergencies in schools. It provides funding for public education about cardiomyopathy and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to school professionals and families. Additionally, the act establishes a grant program to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and AEDs in public schools, ensuring that students, staff, and visitors are equipped to respond to cardiac emergencies.

A big shoutout to one of our amazing clients, Rebecca, who, as an American Heart Association volunteer, played a key role in advocating for this bill’s passage both locally and in Washington. Rebecca is a survivor of cardiac arrest caused by inherited cardiomyopathy.

Here is the AHA statement on the new law.
