Client Question: How Many Reps Should I Do?

I recently had a client ask me how many repetitions they should do when they’re strength training. This is a common question, so I thought it would be helpful to provide some clarity on the topic.
The short answer is: it depends! The number of repetitions you perform of an exercise relies on several factors.
The most important initial question to ask when selecting the number of repetitions is:
“What is the goal of the exercise?”
According to the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), training goals can be broken down into four categories:
1) Strength
2) Power
3) Hypertrophy (increasing muscle)
4) Muscular Endurance
There are particular repetition ranges that are optimal for each goal:
1) Strength: 1-6 reps
2) Power: 1-5 reps
3) Hypertrophy: 6-12 reps
4) Muscular Endurance: 12 or more reps
You’re actually training all of these qualities no matter how many repetitions you perform. Depending on the range you select, one quality will be emphasized.
Repetition ranges are also associated with how much weight should be used:
1) Strength: Heavy loads
2) Power: Heavy loads
3) Hypertrophy: Moderate loads
4) Muscular Endurance: Light loads
There are many other variables to consider when designing a strength training program, but that’s beyond the scope of this article.

Natick Community Organic Farm 5k Update

We had a great time representing PT PROGRESSION recently at the Natick Community Organic Farm 5k. Through donations from the local community, they were able to raise $3,000 towards their Scholarship Fund.
Here's a bit about their Scholarship Fund:
"The Farm Scholarship Fund helps children and families access the programs at the Farm. This year we have expanded the fund so we can help more schools have field trips to the Farm. Over the past few years, we noticed that often the cost of transportation can be prohibitive for schools wanting to visit and we want as many children to experience the Farm as possible!"
The Natick Community Organic Farm is a nonprofit, certified-organic farm. They provide productive open space, farm products, and hands-on education for all ages, year-round. Located right down the street from us, it is an absolute gem for the community of Natick and beyond.
