Is Tennis Really the "World's Healthiest Sport"?

The U.S. Open proudly calls tennis the “World’s Healthiest Sport.” Bold claim, right? But when you break down what goes into health, tennis actually makes a pretty strong case.
Why Tennis Earns the Title
- Longevity: Studies have found that racket sports like tennis are linked with longer life expectancy compared to many other activities. The mix of aerobic and anaerobic effort seems to be a sweet spot for heart and overall health.
- Cardiovascular Fitness: Matches can last hours, keeping the heart pumping with sustained intervals of moderate to high intensity. Think built-in HIIT (high intensity interval training).
- Strength + Power: Serving and groundstrokes demand explosive upper- and lower-body strength, while rallies constantly load the legs, hips, and core.
- Agility + Quickness: Tennis asks for lightning-fast sprints, lateral cuts, and quick reaction times - sometimes dozens of changes in direction in a single rally.
- Endurance: Long matches test stamina, both physical and mental. You’re not just sprinting for one play - you’re sustaining performance over time.
- Coordination + Balance: The blend of hand-eye coordination, footwork, and balance challenges both body and brain.
How It Stacks Up Against Other Sports
- Soccer: Amazing for endurance and team dynamics, but running in mostly one direction doesn’t challenge agility the way tennis does.
- Basketball: Great for agility, power, and cardio - but shorter bursts of play and frequent substitutions mean less sustained endurance.
- Golf: Excellent for mental focus, mobility, and precision - but let’s be honest, while it is a great aerobic pastime that can be played well into the later years, it doesn’t challenge the anaerobic component of fitness.
- Running/Cycling: Stellar for cardiovascular and endurance health, but they lack the strength, agility, and coordination components tennis demands.
The PT Perspective
What makes tennis unique is its all-in-one workout. You’re training fast-twitch and slow-twitch fibers, building cardiovascular and muscular endurance, sharpening your agility, and strengthening bones through weight-bearing impact - all in a sport you can play well into your 80s. Plus, it’s social, mentally engaging, and just plain fun.
The Final Rally
Is tennis truly the world’s healthiest sport? While no single activity is perfect for everyone, tennis scores points across nearly every category of physical fitness - and unlike many sports, it’s highly accessible across the lifespan. Whether you’re serving at the U.S. Open or volleying at the local park, tennis is hard to beat for long-term health. Plus, I have yet to see a more explosive athlete than Carlos Alcaraz in my lifetime.
Construction Update!

Big strides over the past couple of weeks! We’ve officially passed our rough electrical and framing inspections, and the two spaces are now connected (thank you for your patience with the extra noise during that process!). On the outside, the exterior painting is complete, and gutters are up, while the inside received a fresh layer of spray foam insulation to keep things efficient and comfortable year-round.

Up next: it’s time for blueboard and plaster as the walls start to take shape. Step by step, the vision is becoming a reality - thank you for following along as our new space comes to life!
