Exercise to Enhance Cognitive Performance
It's safe to say that the concept 'exercise is good for my health' is a ubiquitous belief. Whether or how consistently we act on this belief is another issue altogether. I'm sharing this study because, at least for me, specific evidence helps provide a little extra wind in the sail.
This 2019 journal article summarizes a study whose data suggest that exercise improves executive function and attention in young, healthy individuals. The researchers compared aerobic and resistance training with a control group and concluded that both exercise interventions improve executive function, while resistance training improved attention to a greater extent.
The takeaway: a 30-minute moderate to high intensity workout (cardio OR resistance training) will enhance performance and boost brain power for a deep work session, high-stakes presentation, parenting, or household task management. The way they went about designing the study is pretty fascinating; we're happy to summarize in more detail for anyone interested!
Tip We Like
Do you find yourself sitting too much during the day? An easy way to help change that: drink more water.
Drinking more water will force you to get up and use the bathroom more often. You'll end up moving more throughout the day, and you'll likely stay hydrated as well. A win-win!
Try keeping a stainless steel water bottle with you at all times and sipping it regularly throughout the day. Let us know if you give it a try!
