"So, What do you do?"

“So, what do you do?”

It’s a standard question we’ve all been asked, typically by someone trying to break the ice in a conversation. I was recently asked this question at a party and, honestly, I wasn’t sure exactly how to respond. Without elaborating, I said, “I’m a physical therapist.”

The gentleman I was speaking with nodded his head, indicating that he was familiar with the profession. “You must work with a lot of people after they have surgery, right?” he replied. In my head, I knew this didn’t completely encapsulate what I do; in fact, it really wasn’t an accurate description at all. “How do I answer this?” I thought to myself.

“Well,” I said, “I work with highly motivated, middle-aged individuals who are in pain, or who have a history of pain, and help them live a more active, fulfilling life.”

He looked at me quizzically, and I could tell that he was slightly confused. His concept of physical therapy didn’t come close to matching what I had just described. This brief exchange got me thinking about how best to describe what I do.

At PT PROGRESSION, we are physical therapists by training. We look at movement and improve it through a combination of hands-on techniques and therapeutic exercises.

But what we have to offer here is so much more than that. To lead a healthier and more fulfilling life, the requirements are greater.

That’s why we take a holistic approach. While moving well is essential, it’s also essential to improve your overall fitness through strength training and cardiovascular exercise.

It’s not uncommon for us to perform a joint mobilization on someone’s hip, coach them through a dumbbell squat, and encourage them during a conditioning circuit, all within the same session.

It’s also not uncommon for us to discuss sleep and recovery strategies, nutritional considerations, and stress management techniques. We believe that it takes a comprehensive plan to live a life that’s more active, healthy, and fulfilling.

At PT PROGRESSION, our unique approach is designed to help you live that life.
