Red Light Therapy: Hype or Helpful?


You may have seen red light panels popping up in gyms, wellness studios, and medical clinics. Red light therapy has been around longer than most people realize, and it is gaining attention again for a simple reason. It can support how your body heals and recovers.

Red light therapy uses low levels of red and near infrared light to help cells do their job more efficiently. This is not the same as tanning or UV light. It does not burn the skin or cause damage. In fact, it was first studied by NASA as a way to help astronauts heal wounds and limit muscle loss while in space.

When this specific light reaches your skin, it can help cells produce more energy, improve circulation, and calm inflammation. Over time, that combination may support better recovery and tissue health.

Where it is commonly used?

Red light therapy shows up in a few different areas:

  • Pain and recovery
  • Athletes and active adults often use it to help manage muscle soreness, joint stiffness, and lingering aches. Research has shown it can reduce pain and inflammation in certain muscle and joint conditions, making it a useful non drug option for recovery.
  • Skin health
  • Many people use red light to support collagen production, improve skin tone, and help with acne or general skin health.
  • Wound healing
  • In medical settings, it has been used to support healing after surgery or injury.
  • Hair health
  • Some FDA cleared devices use red light to support hair growth in people with pattern hair loss.

How people typically use it?

Most protocols are simple and consistent:

  • 10 to 20 minutes per session
  • 3 to 5 times per week
  • Placed a few inches to a couple of feet from the body, depending on the device

Like strength training or rehab, results are not instant. Benefits tend to show up after several weeks of regular use.

Is it safe?

For most people, red light therapy is considered low risk when used as directed. Eye protection is recommended when treating the face, and more is not always better. People who are pregnant, have light sensitivity, or are undergoing cancer treatment should check with a healthcare provider first.

Med spa vs at home red light options

One common question we get is whether there is a difference between red light therapy you see in med spas versus what you can use at home. The short answer is yes, but both can be useful depending on your goals.

Med spa and clinical setups

In med spas, physical therapy clinics, and medical offices, red light therapy usually involves large, high powered panels or full body beds. These systems deliver higher output and can cover more surface area at once.

Common features:

  • Large wall mounted or stand up panels
  • Full body light beds
  • Higher light intensity
  • Sessions supervised by staff
  • Typically used for pain, recovery, skin health, or post procedure healing

These setups can be helpful if you want more exposure in less time or are using it alongside other treatments.

At home options

At home red light therapy has come a long way and is much more accessible now. Devices are smaller and less powerful, but with consistency they can still be effective.

Common at home options include:

  • Handheld devices for joints or small areas
  • Wraps or pads for knees, shoulders, or low back
  • Small panels for targeted use
  • Wearable helmets or caps for hair support

At home devices usually require a bit more time or frequency since they are lower output, but they are convenient and easy to use regularly.

Which is better?

Neither is inherently better. It depends on how you plan to use it.

If you want convenience and consistency, at home options often make sense. If you are dealing with more significant pain, recovery from injury, or want full body exposure, a clinical or med spa setup may be a better fit.

Just like rehab and training, the tool matters less than how consistently and intelligently it is used. Red light therapy works best when it supports a bigger plan that includes movement, strength, and recovery habits that actually stick.

Now, let's clear the air.

Myth 1: You should stretch before you work out

Long static stretching before exercise does not prevent injury. Holding stretches too long can actually reduce muscle strength temporarily.

Translation: you just made your muscles a little worse at the exact moment you want them to work.

A dynamic warm up works better. Move, elevate your heart rate, and gradually load the tissues you’re about to use. Save longer stretching for later in the day when your body has time to recover.

Myth 2: You need heavy weights to build muscle

You can build muscle with lighter weights and higher reps just as effectively as heavy lifting, as long as the sets are challenging.

And no, lifting heavy will not accidentally turn you into a bodybuilder. Muscle takes intention, consistency, and time. It does not sneak up on you.

Myth 3: Running ruins your knees

Running does not destroy your knees. In fact, staying active may protect joint health over time.

The real issue is violating what we call the rule of too much, too fast, too soon. When training load increases too aggressively, tissues complain. Build gradually and address pain early instead of trying to “push through it.”

Myth 4: Walking is enough as you age

Walking is excellent for cardiovascular health and longevity. But walking alone does not preserve muscle mass.

Starting in your 30s, strength declines unless you train it. Strength training is what keeps you capable, independent, and resilient as you age. Walking keeps you moving. Strength keeps you functioning.

Myth 5: Modifications mean you’re weak

Modifying an exercise is not quitting. It is intelligence.

Your body changes day to day based on stress, sleep, work, and recovery. Adjusting movements allows you to maintain good form, reduce injury risk, and stay consistent. Consistency always beats ego.

Myth 6: Runners and cyclists don’t need strength training

Running and cycling build endurance, not strength.

Strength training improves bone density, muscle balance, and force production. It also reduces injury risk and improves performance. Stronger legs make better runners and cyclists.

Myth 7: You need 10,000 steps a day

This one came from a 1960s pedometer marketing campaign, not research.

Health benefits appear well below 10,000 steps. Even 4,000 steps per day reduces mortality risk, with benefits leveling off around 7,500. Steps are helpful data, not a moral scorecard.

Myth 8: Ice baths always help recovery

Ice reduces inflammation, but inflammation is not always bad. It is part of how muscles adapt and get stronger.

Using ice after every workout may blunt training gains. Ice is best used strategically for injuries or flare ups, not as a daily recovery ritual. For general recovery, heat and movement often make more sense.
